The challenge faced by many organisations is that the use of data in the work environment is a skill set that is assumed to exist, yet is often lacking in many business professionals. For example, the ‘digital native’ who understands technology and applications, but not the analysis of data. The project manager who has many performance measures yet does not seem to be able to measure success nor motivate their colleagues. Without a fundamental understanding of the impact of data on the world around, business professionals will struggle to take full advantage in their jobs and organisations of the new horizons offered by digital technologies.

The overall goal is that by the end of the programme, attendees should feel that their own perception on data and its use should have fundamentally changed and that they can identify the skills of “data & digital” they may want to develop in order to be a more effective business professional.


Upon successful completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • enhance their understanding of how to use data to improve decision making and stimulate action within their professional environment
  • understand the skills, tools and capabilities they must enhance both as an individual and in their organisations, in order to use data to deliver results more effectively
Mindset of Data
  • Module 1 - What kind of data person(s) are we?

Unless we understand the role of data in the world, and in particular how we personally use data for decision making, then it is hard for us to fully exploit the digital world. This first session will explore this topic, discuss how “Measures drive Behavior” and set up the expectations for the programme

  • Module 2 - Critical Thinking Culture

Critical Thinking is the objective analysis & evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement. We will look at the core skills that support the problem solving and decision-making process: observation, analysis, interpretation, reflection, evaluation, inference and explanation

Value of Data
  • Module 3 - Influence of Data

Without understanding value within an organisation or to an individual, data is meaningless. We will explore how data influences some of the key value drivers in an organisation e.g. reduce process costs, increase revenue, improve customer loyalty, improve employee satisfaction, planning & prediction…

  • Module 4 - Management Data

Using data in a management context is critical for people working in organisations such as project managers and leaders. We will explore management tools such as leading/ lagging KPI’s, dashboards but also at how data integration from different sources creates new insight and actions

Interpreting Data
  • Module 5 - Basic Statistics

Most people experience data analysis as looking at numbers, yet many have minimal understanding of statistics. This module will give a very basic introduction to numbers to understand when an observation is significant or not. We will understand typical data stories told by trends, correlations and outliers

  • Module 6 - Data Visualisation

Data Visual Analytics is one of the most powerful methods to generate action from data, yet it is very poorly understood. We will look at the Analytics process from “asking the question” through to “sharing and acting” on the insight. We will also start to look at new software tools that make this process easier

Software tools
  • Module 7 - Basic Data tools

We will explore the common tools that are available for organising managing and presenting data. Starting with the traditional Excel & Powerpoint, we will look to visualisation softwares such as Tableau & PowerBI, data cleaning tools, basic data bases, analytics tools, project management tools and collaboration tools.

  • Module 8 - Impact of Artificial Intelligence

As Artificial Intelligence is very much in the public eye, often with misleading and confusing representations, this module will explore how it may impact professional roles. We will focus on the use case applications such as analytics or chatbots which will help professionals focus on higher value adding activities. We will understand how to talk to a Data Scientist about more advanced data solutions.

Architecture & Ethics of Data
  • Module 9 - Secure useable Infrastructure

Data requires infrastructure and so the Data Driven Professional should have a basic understanding of IT architecture such as Cloud collaboration tools and the concept of a technology stack. They also should have an understanding of basic Cyber-Security aspects which then leads into regulatory drivers such as GPDR and the ethics around data.

  • Module 10 - Teach Back

Reflection is a key part of the learning process. In this modules the groups will be asked to develop their own reflection on the programme. They then will join with their colleagues and develop a presentation for their lesson learned to 1 or 2 industry experts.

Professionals with the responsibility for delivering a specific set of objectives. This might be a project manager, team leader or even leaders within public, private or charitable organisations
